Why do the stripes on American neckties go in a different direction to UK ones?

I have stirped ties that have the stripes descending from left to right as well as right to left, so there doesn't appear to be any 'pattern' so to speak. Seeing as how they are all made if foreign countries I don't think there is any choice in the matter... UK may be different...

I also have striped ties... same applies to them...

You are right. I bought some ties in HOng Kong and, when I got home, noticed that I was the only one in town wearing a tie where the stripes went the other way. On many trips to the US since, this has been noticeable.

Even Wikipedia notes it:
The most common pattern for such ties was and remains diagonal stripes in alternating colours (running down the tie from the left in the U.K. and most of Europe, rather than the U.S. preference for stripes running down from the right);
