We just thought it was a matter of a body remembering their schooldays better than we could !! What an eye-opener it turned out to be. We also think we may not be as ignorant as first thought as we were educated in different parts of the country and with four years between us and this might well have some bearing on our own ideas, Thanks again.

...and yet it does relate to a serious issue, of course. Because many Brits do feel that they are not part of Europe; the width of the Channel is sufficient to set them free. So the question of how contiguous you have to be to belong to a continent remains open, and is, on the whole, more emotional than scientific.

Just to add to the mix - if an island is a land mass totally surrounded by water why is/was (not going to re-open that can of worms!) Australia classed as a continent and not an island?
Whilst we're on the subject of isalnds, I was at a quiz night and the question was - what is the largest island in the world? That one really caused a bit of a stink and several quizzers nearly came to fisticuffs. We went with the quizmasters answer (which was papua/new guinea) but since then the debate has raged. Any ideas anyone?
