For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.....as far as I can gather QM it actually means the opposite.......car makers quote the Urban cycle for MPG comparisons to give buyers a more realistic compumption figure than a straight 56mph figure...."Extra Urban" is for users in large cities like London to give them an idea of consumption figures they can expect with more time spent in traffic.
You could well be right, S. I've neither owned nor driven a car for over ten years, so I have zero personal interest. However, I just did a Google search using "extra urban"+mileage and came up with this site http://vauxhall.co.uk/offers/index.jhtml?vehicleTy

Reading the mpg figures for the Corsa Energy there, they say: "urban 40.9" and "extra urban 64.2". As best I recall, higher mileages were those obtained on long journeys...ie ones outside the city and hence with "less time spent in traffic".
Perhaps an automotive engineer will appear here and tell us all one way or t'other! Cheers
