I want to buy a hand held vhs radio for use on my boat on UK inland waterways.
What license do i need ?

Radio licences ceased to exist in 1971.

If you mean a ship to shore radio that might be different matter.

If you mean a Marine band Transmitter/Receiver you would be required to sit an exam.I took my exam at the Boat Show Earls Court. The licence was,then, a Board of Trade issue and the examiner was from the Bof T. I received the pre exam lessons from Thames Division ex Merchant/Royal Navy Wireless operator.
Morse code was not a requirement to pass the exam.

Danny, licenses are not needed for ordianary radio, but are needed in specialist areas. Mr U still holds his class A radio license and is not allowed to transmit or receive on certain airwaves without it. There are also very strict rules on which wavelengths he is allowed to use.

Just pulled out my Restricted Certificate of Competence in Radio Telephony . VHF Only
It was issued by The Secretary of State in February 1991 and remains validfor life unless I transgress.

I also have a RYA Little manual entitled VHF RadioTelephony for Yachtsmen REF General G22/89. Read that well and you will pass the exam
