It is tradition for a woman to show a symbol of her impending marriage so that potential suitors will know on sight that she is betrothed, and they can avoid any embrassment caused by asking her for a date.
I don't think tradition has moved on sufficiently for men to need to same symbol of betrothal - which is not to say that an individual should not wear a ring symbol if he so wishes, simply that it is not the norm at present.
I don't think many men would buy into the idea, simply because no-one would know what the ring symbolises, unlike a man's wedding ring which is becoming more common among younger men who wish to show their comitment to everyone.

I think it's a bit hypocritical though when you have been married many years and have children by a man who absolutely refuses to wear a wedding ring, only to be left and then guess what? He wears a wedding ring for wife No 2! No, I'm not bitter, I just think rings mean nothing, I know lots of people who just take them off and then back on to suit the occasaion.
Most guys don't have engagement rings, just sort of unusual.
its really up to the guy if he wants to wear one.personally i wouldn`t like him to wear am engagement ring as it would leave no place for a wedding ring.
pips,i think are ring means a lot,it shows commitment and usually stops people of the opposite sex`s hitting on you.
i dont know anyone that takes their rings off when they feel like it.

I see your point pips.
There are men who will remove their wedding ring if they are out socially, and may meet someone to whom they do not wish to reveal their marital status. Problem is, you can't remove the groove that your ring leaves behind!
I wear a ring, have since I got married, and I do like it as a symbol of my commitment, but maybe I just have a better experience of marriage?

Ow pips!
Well my father didn't wear one nor his father and nor do I
Nor would I should anything change - I hate jewelry - i just about put up with a watch.
My wife's not insecure enough to put a big "Do not touch sign around my neck"
Having said that she lost her wedding ring about 9 months ago and I surprised her with a replacement about 3 months later - because I thought she might like the gesture.
Which she did.
I guess rings are a girl thing

Aahh jake-the-peg, that was a lovely gesture. What a lucky lady your wife is, and Andys. Sorry demongirlie to deviate from your original question. In reply, I think it is up to the individual, but in my own mind I agree rings are a nice girly thing to wear, especially engagement rings - I was SO proud of mine. Wedding rings are a different thing, most men do wear them nowadays as the bride normally likes the matching sets.
I don't wear a wedding ring as it doesn't fit since I broke my wrist badly2 1/2 years ago...strange but my fingers on that hand got bigger. Still waiting for OH to buy me another....wedding anniversary on Sunday 34 years so he MIGHT suprise me. My engagement ring was a gift from Ma-in-Law 15 years ago ( it was her Mother-in-Laws ).
OH doesn't wear a wedding ring either so I don't mind either way.
