Tv In A Pub
Never watched Life on Mars before but i did the other night. There was a scene where John Simms character offered to put a TV in his local and the landlord was gobsmacked. "TV in a pub?"
The next day i happened to catch an old episode of Heartbeat. Sitting in a corner next to the bar was a TV.
I was born in 1972 so slightly confused as to when TVs starting appearing in public houses

I lived in Somerset late 70's. Many of the country pubs were quiet on midweek evenings until 8pm or later so the landlords would have TV in the bar to make a bit of sound in the bar (an open dead quiet empty pub is sooooo depressing) and for whoever was working (usually the landlord or landlady) to make it less boring to sit there. It would be turned off or the sound...

Mmm, interesting. I would say that Heartbeat was wrong.
Can't remember seeing TVs in the pubs I used in the 70s.
Remember seeing 1 when Video Recorders first came out,(80s?) it was quite a novelty but ordinary people couldn't afford them in the house.
I suppose Sky sport (football) made them de rigueur.(whenever that started.

It would be turned off or the sound muted if a customer came in. Early customers might ask to see the news or the weather forecast and it went on from there.
