No
Make sure that you don't get stopped at the hard border.

thank you
I would double check with passport office plus things may change if brexit happens in March, although I think that's unlikely.

govt site says rules will not change..just wasn't sure what they are !
There’s no border as such or at least nowhere to check passports. You just drive or train or bus - or walk - around as you would within in the UK. You’d probably need photo ID to book a flight from Belfast to Dublin but then you’d need that for London to Newcastle too probably.
Morning Minty I looked at website and I couldn't make sense of it either, that's why I suggested calling them. I guess you have to ask yourself if you were travelling to say France, would you be happy to do so with your ID card, because entering Eire is effectively doing the same thing.
Question Author
ta Tony..might do that to be safe
Entering France from the UK is not the same as entering Rep of Ireland from N Ireland.
On the other hand I’d be surprised if you were on a trip from GB to Ireland and did not have some form of photo ID with you already. Passport though definitely not. There isn’t anywhere to show it!

ta Ich xx my passport expired last year but easyjet will take it
Ichkeria, I only used the comparison because effectively you are doing the same thing in my mind i.e. Moving between UK and EU.
Hi Tony: Minty’s talking about going from N Ireland to Eire which is not the same even as going from GB to Ireland. There really is no border.
Some friends of ours came from Ukraine to GB recently mistakenly thinking they could use their British visa to get to Ireland which of course they couldn’t.
No issue here though
Ikeria I appreciate there is no hard border, I would just err on the safety side in case I got stopped for any reason in Eire by Garda. I appreciate that passport replacement is expensive, but it's also but it's the best form of photo id to have IMO and that of my bank and building society.
We needed a passport travelling from R of I to UK - that was few years ago, still couldn't board a plane without one
Ooops on reading your original question, I see you're not flying directly to RoI (coming in the back door as we say down here :) )
As I implied earlier, if you travel anywhere these days it’s always wise to have ID on you for cases where the Gardai or anyone else might ask. If your passport has expired it’s also always a good idea to renew it.
However in answer to the original simple question the answer is still No
Hi ducksie: on the subject of the “back door” I wondered how our friends from Kyiv would have fared if they’d gone Cairnryan-Larne and down to Co Meath. In reality I suspect they’d have faced awkward questions at the port in Scotland and their Ukraine registered vehicle travelling from NI would have alerted an enthusiastic Garda patrol ...
Can you not renew your passport? Renewals usually arrive very quickly.
A few years back I flew with Air Lingus to Dublin and my uncle only had photo ID. It might have changed now though.
