Why don't you try the solution which has had success in Glasgow?
"Jacob Rees-Mogg, the head of the European Research Group, told the FT this week that he could accept a legal codicil attached to the withdrawal agreement stating that the backstop could not last permanently."

EU, "Yeah sure Jacob, you can gave that. Won't be permanent." Whispers behind hand, "Yeah, just for the next thousand years or so."
And of course what JRM (and many others) seem to have conveniently overlooked is that the leaving "agreement" contains many, many shortcomings of which the NI issue is just but one. The agreement means the UK will not, in anything other than name, leave the EU. I don't blame the EU for offering nothing else. That is their prerogative.
