Well, the title pretty much sums up what I want to know. But basically, is there somewhere I can go to sort everything out together, or do I have to plan each place / flight etc individually through different companies?
Thanks in advance.
I'm pretty much clueless so any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Lonely planet website has a great forum called 'thorn tree'. You'll find loads of info on the internet about buying 'around the world' tickets, which are definitely the best value - you need to shop around cos prices vary greatly. You can plan everything from home or you can buy flights from each individual country, it depends on whether you want to be on a strict itinerary or not. Good luck!
Probably the easiest way of doing it would be to decide how many stops you need/ which places you want to visit, and then have a look at a round world ticket that accommodates your plans.
You can get tickets with various numbers of stops though most insist that you go in the one direction and don;t double back on yourself.
Trailfinders are great for helping you plan your route and also helping you find accommodation for each stop within your budget. They also used to help with finding you jobs for a few weeks should you need to fund your travels, though I don't know if they do these days.
You really should do some research yourself on this as well rather than just taking our advice, it's not a trip to be taken lightly! And it will also help you to feel more confident too.
Any 'proper' travel agent that is worth the name will do it for you, though DIY may be cheaper.

And by 'proper' I mean an independent or specialist, not somewhere like Going Places who exist only to sell their own package holidays.

Places like Wexas and Travelbag for starters

Trailfinders is another good company to use I think.
It might be an idea going into STA Travel to pick up some brochures and speak to one of their people - most of them have travelled pretty broadly and are really good for advice. Also, if you're a student they offer discounts but are pretty cheap on the whole.
I asked my wife if she fancied a world cruise....she said "can't we go somewhere else?"
I am a travel advisor and travelled extensively throughout the UK and Europe and also the States, Australia, New Zealand and the Far East including Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Dubai but first I would say be loyal to one air line alliance - say STAR ALLIANCE and one round the world trip will give you a free flight within Europe - I went round the World then for a follow up had a free holiday in St Petersburgh - just using Star Alliance Card - I would recommend Singapore Airlines and also SQ320 departing Singapore around noon into LHR around 1900hrs for a return to the UK on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday as this is a jumbo and travels to Heathrow very rarely half full - I have been checked in twice by row and not by seat - four seats for a Economy Return with Fantastic Service from the staff - you must try SINGAPORE AIRLINES - my second choice is Virgin Atlantic - again FANTASTIC
