Someone STOLE my garage?
16 Answers
I have a garage round the back of my house. It is one of a block of 6 garages.
When I moved in, some 9 months ago, I was not given a key for the garage so instead I used a padlock to lock the garage up.
Yesterday I went to the garage and the padlock has been removed and my cycle was left outside and the garage is now locked up.
The garage is in my deeds for the house.
Am I within my rights to break the lock and change it?? Can anyone recommend what action I should take.
Thanks in advance for your help.

with any luck it will be full of stolen goods and they'll get what they deserve.
i am baffled - did they think you'd just say 'oh no, never mind' and let them have it??
perhaps get a proper lock fitted that cannot be pulled off
also put a sign on it saying property of local tenant mr bloggs ( no real name or address as they may come round)

i can't believe the face of some people: absolutely astonishing.
Hope you find some stuff out, and I would get the police involved also. Mayb also contact your local paper. That is the sort of story they like and it might get you a bit of coverage and people will be more likely to give information esp if the scoundrel is named and shamed!

post an update soon,
I spoke to the previous owner yesterday and they say they have not been to the garage. I also knocked on the doors of a few neighbours and the other people that live in my block and none of them know anything about my garage. One neighbour did say that my bike had been out there for about a week. Also changed my locks on my house. Gonna head to the police tonight and see what they say. Thanks everyone for your support!
Me too - but just lost my last post by accidently clicking on one of the adverts on the left there - for BLOODY PADLOCKS !!!
Anyway - came back just to see how you're doing jonnyollet, and at the same time it also pushes this thread back towards the top of my "Questions I Gave Answers To" list on my profile !!

Hi guys, sorry I haven't replied earlier.
I checked with the police and they said as long as it belongs to you, you can do what you want.
So, I thought I'll check with the land registry first to make sure it is actually mine.
Turns out that particular garage does not belong to me, but the one next to it is mine. (The reason I thought the first one was mine was that was the one the estate agent showed me and that was the one the previous owner said belonged to the house.)
The guy in the flat upstairs is using my new garage and I think his landlord is using the old one. I have showed him the documents and he has agreed to move his stuff out ( he is moving out the flat anyway).
To get the stuff out of my first garage, I am going to push a note under to ask him/her when I can get my stuff out.
I bought my flat 9 months ago and all I have had is problem after problem!! Wish I just stayed renting!
