Bonkers Bureaucracy

A while back I posted that the Foodbank, where im a volunteer van driver, were trying to get the funding to employ me on a salary. Its been a while in coming but now they have the funding to pay me. However apparently they have to advertise the job (even though its basically mine already). Im not sure if this is law or Trussell Trust policy but now I have to go through the process of filling in an application form, been interviewed (by people that Ive been working with for the last 8 months), getting references (even tho they already have them) and been taken out on the van to see my driving skills (even tho ive been driving it for the past 8 months)
The volunteer co-ordinator has told me today that its nuts but they have to do it.
Theres going to be people applying for this job who don't have a hope of getting it, thus wasting their time and everyone elses.
WHY?
Has the world gone mad?

when I applied for a job in 1978, I was given a starting date and I said - erm isnt meant to be advertised ?
and the junr office clerk said - well I am the only going to offer you a job so you have better say yes!
in the same year other employers went really snotty about having to advertise and declining to tell me when they were gonna !

When you think the world has gone mad, it's time for a bit of self-examination. Ask a trusted friend for an opinion. You seem to think that people other than you who apply for the job don't have a hope of getting it. Why do you think that you are so superior to them. If you were applying for a job would you be happy if an insider thought he had it stitched up in his favour?
As I was saying...
"Employers looking to recruit the best people are likely to want to cast their nets as wide as possible. Conventional wisdom is that the wider the pool, the better the talent.
Half the available talent
So it may come as a surprise to learn that a half of all jobs on offer are not advertised publicly, according to research from job-matching site TheLadders."

I don't. Read the OP again (if you've read it at all).
The point was that they appear to have to go through a process which seems to waste everybodies time, when they have a ready made employee, who has worked for them unpaid for the past 8 months and whom they wish to employ.

Its absolutely not the law to have to advertise a role, but to provide equal opportunities is.
In this case the only legal obligation is to ensure that anyone within the organisation, is given equal op to be considered for the role. So if there were two or three people working as driver's mates say, theycouldnt just give the job to the one who has been there the longest ot thr one who asks first. sadly employment law only applies to employees and not volunteers.
Why they are advertising this particular role is beyond me. Unless there are other volunteer drivers who should be considered too?
Sounds like unconfident HR gone bonkers. Deep breath Nailit, apply and play the game from start to finish. If you can hold it together you will get the job I'm sure.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;
Etc!
