They do that a lot in India, Eddie. On one of our trips to Kerala we used a beach restaurant a few times. It was a lovely place, dim lighting, overlooking the Indian Ocean. There was a gift shop next door. At 10pm the shop turned out all its lights and closed and at the same time the lights in the restaurant doubled in brightness. When we looked during the day we saw a thick-ish cable strung from the nearest lamp post (a tidy step away) which served both the shop and the restaurant! Regulations be damned !!!
