Pregnant new starters

Where I work, there have been two young girls taken on, both have fallen pregnant (alledgedly) within several weeks of starting, they are both off sick with morning sickness and are certificated off until further notice, then more time off will be given when the baby is born, so there time at work will be nil! In the meantime someone has to do their work!! Fed up!

Also, when they return, under their probabtionary period, they can be let go at just 1 days notice as unsuitable without any reason required
While thats true Ethel, eyeshade says that they were already pregnant when starting, therefore they would not ne eligable if that were the case.

Statutory maternity pay is 90% of weekly wage for first six weeks then �108.

Eyeshade, you DONT have to do their work. Do what you're contracted for. Easy said but your boss should be the one to sort things out, not you. Join a trade union. Incidentally, women have a right to get pregnant (not all of us have the ability) but that shouldn't mean that other women have to be burdened by the work they leave undone.
as violet said, you don't suddenly have to work twice as hard, and do twice as much to take up their slack - you work in the conditions you are contracted to do, if the work falls behind its the bosses problem, not yours.

Have had devils own job getting back into AB, now am back, thatnks for info. Problem is I work for a small charity and we don't like to rock the boat too much as it causes problems all round, I just think that people should give more thought when applying for a job as to what their priorities are, a family or a job and some days are worse than others especially when you know that one person is putting the "sick" bit on. Anyway, I am trying to feel good about it all and positive and hopefully the good thoughts will outdo the bad ones!!! Thanks for info. ES
I believe, unless it has changed since I last looked, that you have to be employed for 6 months with your company before you are entitled to be paid maternity benefit from them. I had an employee that had been working for me for about 2 month, then stated she was pregnant. I found out that I did not have to pay her any maternity leave apart from the statutory minimum. I would presume that this would apply regardless of when the employee fell pregnant?
