after having a tooth 'built up' how long does it usually take to feel normal and not all sticky-out and big?

it should feel immediately right, before you leave the chair ... if it dosent, they have not filed it down enough

dammit! I thought it was a bit weird, I'd had it done ages ago but it cracked so went to have it done today but when I bite down it feels wrong, thought it was jsut because it was new but I suppose I best make another appointment for next week!

Yes, kazza 12345 is right, it should feel 'normal' within a few minutes, and if not, then something is not right, and you need to go back.

well thankfully, I'm not on the NHS so it makes no difference in payment but very annoying still! He did ask if it felt right but I thought it was just because I wasn't used to it!

If you are concerned by all means return to the dentist it could be that indeed the filling is simply too high. However if the original cracked then your occlusion/'bite' may have adjusted accordingly and that sometimes causes a 'build-up' filling to feel odd for a while.
