My daughter who is 13 in May reads a great deal - and generally quite decent books..... Angela's ashes for example...

Can anyone tell me about this book...Is it suitable .... what I want to avoid is a book full of expliciot sex scenes or too much violence....my daughetr is sensible so I am trying not to be over the top on censorship...but you know

I don't know the book myself kilkenny , but I've just looked it up on my local libraries online catalogue, + it's classified there as a children's book, so I'm guessing it would be ok for a 13yr old. x

She might like Little Face by Sophie Hannah. It's an adult book with no sex or violence. It's about a mother who claims that her baby is no longer her's and has been swapped with another. But it then twists and turns.

I was a voracious reader at 13 (and still am) and usually read books usually read by young adults / adults. Your daughter might like 'Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry' by Mildred D Taylor which is set in the Deep South and touches on racial tensions, but from a child's perspective so is very accessible.

I also loved historical novels such as the books by Jean Plaidy. One of my all time favourite books is Little Women by Louisa May Alcott which I read for the first time when I was about 14-15.

The books making the rounds in my freshman classes are the "Twilight" Trilogy by Stephanie Myer. Usually when I read the books the kids pass around, I understand the appeal, but feel the books are so-so. These i really enjoyed. The other titles are "Eclipse" and "New Moon".

No sex, but it is referred to. Classified as YA Lit.

i read 'the loving spirit' by daphne du maurier when i was about 12/13, and it has stayed with me as a lovely book, one of my all-time favourites.
i read 'angela's ashes' a couple of years ago, and to be honest i think it's very poorly written and not a book i would ever recommend to anyone.

13 year old girls in my limited experience (2 daughters) know far more than their parents' generation ever did.
I remember "the" conversation -

her - what do you want to know?
