Converting sliding wardrobe doors to hinged
3 Answers
We had a fitted wardrobe installed about a year ago and always had trouble with opening and closing the doors. Despite repeated messages left for the carpenter they never returned to fix it.
A year later and the doors are impossible to operate fluidly. I dont think the runners/rollers were ever right.
The upshot is I plan to convert the doors to be hinged. Despite a bit of careful measuring and cutting of the doors I'm a bit concerned about the weight of the doors and what hinges would be suitable.
The doors (as is the whole wardrobe) made of MDF and each door is able 7ft high by about 2ft wide. The thickness of the doors is only about 3/4s of an inch so the screws holding the hinges in wouldnt be very long.
I've seen some concealed, sprung hinges and would probably need around 4 per door. Would this be feasible? I'm worried about the weight of the doors.

There are good wardrobe door sliding systems you could look at Boolders if you fancy putting it right. They're not at all difficult to fit.
Otherwise, yes, 18mm is not enough to mount conventional hinges. You'll need surface hinges of some kind. I've used ordinary kitchen cupboard hinges before. I would guess you would need four on each door though.

They need letting in to the door, but if you want something similar, think about these.......
