What stung me please ?

in the garden this afternoon and something landed on my head - I took it off with my fingers and when I looked it was something resembling a wasp but smaller - orangey brown - I shook it away and it flew off but not without stinging me first on my finger. It left no sting in my finger, but it went very red and slightly raised. It hurt like hell for about 30 seconds and then settled down. No pain after five minutes. I now can't see anything - does anyone have any clues as to what it was please ??

It may have been a bee, I have been stung thousands of times by bees and its not always that they leave a sting behind, a better description may result in a positive ID but I dont suppose you studied it for long.
