The actual impact was nothing compared to what could have happened. It was days or less from a thermonuclear blast which would have wiped out everything within a 200km
radius and possible left much of Europe uninhabitable for 1000s of years. It was actually Sweden which raised the alarm worldwide and Gorbachev only broadcast to the nation in mid May, 3 weeks after the original accident.
