Swimmimg bunnies?

My son and daughter-in-law, who are on holiday in Scotland on a small island in a sea-loch are positive that they saw a hare swimming in the sea, having seen it previously on the land. I have never heard of hares or rabbits swimming - can anyone confirm if it is possible they were not seeing things, and that hares and rabbits do swim?

I've just found this on a website: The European brown hare (Lepus capensis or europaeus) takes readily to water and swims well. It often crosses from island to island off the coast of Scotland. Rabbits while able to swim are not as adept as the hare, though if need be will take to the water to escape predators.

Your question made me think bradmoor. We often see hares on the Chesil Bank in Dorset and to get there they have to swim across the Fleet Lagoon - unless they travel the scenic route via Weymouth.
