How do you clean candle wax from a natural "birchover?" stone fireplace?

I read warm soapy water and brush but am concerned regarding spreading remnants of softened wax... any experts that can advise??

Scrape all the wax off with a blade or window scraper almost parrallel to the stone so that you do not scratch it.
Cover the spot with absorbent blotting paper and apply a hot iron, moving the paper to a fresh spot when you see some wax has been drawn up.
