Why are hourly rates for bar staff in the UK so low?

maybe it is that the staff are under 22, when rates are lower, 22+ has to be national minimum wage.

You can't train a monkey to put up with all the crap that some bar staff put up with. The reason is that beer companies, like all companies, are in it to make money and pay what they can least get away with.
I whole heartedly agree with you. The hours are awful, pay is awful, little or no holidays. I often had to put up with bad managers, drunk and abusive customers & accomodation that you wouldn't let your dog live in. Oh and 99.9% of the pubs i worked in wouldn't let you accept tips! It's no wonder that the standard of pub service in this country is appalling!
