//NJ, I suspect that the rules need to be looked at again about inheritance then, rather than expecting people to get married in order to receive money.//
People are not expected to get married to get money. They can stay single. But marriage is a legal concept that bestows certain rights and privileges on those who take part. If you don’t want those rights and privileges, don’t take part. It’s rather like wanting to use the facilities of a club if you’re not a member and complaining that you face discrimination if you are shut out. Yes, a will is the ideal way to deal with inheritance but huge numbers of people, especially younger ones, die intestate. The rules of intestacy are designed to cope with those circumstances and they cannot readily be adapted to cope with unmarried partners. DNA testing, as suggested, is only a solution if there are children of the partnership. Life is not the Jeremy Kyle show.
By all means couples should remain unwed if that is their choice. But they should understand that it may present them with certain difficulties and they cannot expect those difficulties to be overcome by government when there is a readily available solution.
