Can one be happy without having to put in the work? What if our happiness comes at the cost of others’ happiness? Can we be truly happy knowing we’ve hurt someone?
Some people certainly seem able to. Not everything that makes people happy requires work though either. When you fall in love with someone it's because they are the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, there ought to be no work involved in that, but the older I get the more I'm coming to believe our happiness is our own responsibility and not anyone...
There have been times when I have been tremendously unhappy in my life but can honestly say at no time thought about sleeping with my best friends partner to alleviate that unhappiness.
Everyone has their vice that they turn to when they are down, Alcohol, Drugs, promiscuity, food, religion, exercise. Many many people are in unhappy relationships. I would want to hear the whole story rather than the sensationalised "she slept with her best friends partner"
perhaps she has done her best friend a favour, he can be tempted easily..
You did however criticise your sister for being happy with her 'millionaire lifestyle' ( as though she should not?!?) and mentioned that she brought about the destruction of two marriages to obtain it so you brought up infidelity in the first place Frank x
With respect I was replying to your last comment. There are no conditions on happiness such as being good enough or needing to earn it. Happiness can be had through the simplest of actions that cost nothing and don't require a huge physical or mental effort.
Applogies, I felt the thread was being steered off topic.
I brought up my sisters situation as an example of the OP 'Can we be truly happy knowing we’ve hurt someone?'
I was not criticizing her lifestyle nor her right to happiness. I was making an observation that some people are willing to pursue happiness over others unhappiness, and asking the question can one be truly happy knowing we've hurt someone.
To answer that I think sometimes. there is one person whose happiness I couldn't give a toss about because they are such a malevolent force against someone I love, everyone else I would be disinclined to hurt or upset.
