29a He, to be candid, is backward (8). ?R?N?L?N. FRANKLYN = HE is the obvious answer, with "to be clear" = FRANK or FRANKLY, bur wher does the LYN or N come from?

For 29 A, I feel there should be a word before backward, something such as 'nothing' … but I can't come up with anything smooth enough to make a satisfactory clue.

My thoughts too Nac; I even checked that the clue had been typed correctly by checking the crossword on Press Reader - and it is.
