Lack of diversity at the BBC? He must be joking.

//...this programme should have been presented by someone with a thorough knowledge of islam and middle eastern politics...//

I've yet to see anybody employed in mainstream media who has any knowledge of Islam, far less a "thorough" one, GymLadTim. And a consequence of that ignorance is that none of them are capable of understanding Middle Eastern politics.

Islam comes with a prayer mat, but it is at its heart a totalitarian political ideology complete with a "perfect" in-built legal system. It is the powerful hold this ideology has over a high proportion of the populations in Muslim majority countries, and, perhaps, especially the Arab ones, which creates a massive inertial force which resists modernisation and change particularly in respect of democratic concepts of equality. Islam teaches that Islam must dominate, and that non-Muslims enjoy rights and are tolerated only to the extent that they accept their inferior status.

And that is why it is difficult to find a successful democracy where Islam is prevalent; and explains the paradox that non-Muslims have enjoyed more tolerance and religious freedom under autocrats. Think through Mubarak->Morsi->Sisi.
It was immediately apparent to me that this sign given by these ISIS sandbags was a signal of contempt known as 'giving the bird'. I thought it description addressed to the West and the BBC. I first came across it in the film 'Top Gun' and learnt it was the equivalent of a reversed well known Churchillian gesture meaning 'go forth and multiply'
Please be aware the link I supply to back up my theory may contain rude words that may offend those of a delicate nature who have never ventured outside the world of Answer Bank. :-)

a critical piece - someone once said in a critical piece the quotes the author uses for his criticism are probably the only things worth reading

and so it often is with AB opinions - it is worth looking at the program. Stace is in el hole internment camp and it really is a hole
the flame haired gal is the only one not in a chador ( head necky scarf fing - you know) - and she had to have a keeper as a guard was stabbed the other week.
she is attracted to the Brummie and scouse accents and the girls ( if that they be etc) damn themselves with their own testimony

so that you think - yikes no wonder the govt dont want them back

like you know - do you condemn the killing of innocent little babies?
answer: well other people do it as well

eek ready to stoke the fires of hell !
At last confused thinking and general ignorance has been replaced by clear analysis.

My only quibble (which may, itself, be based on ignorance) is that the chador was particularly an Iranian garment.
...and sometimes comes in very un-Islamic provocative forms (dependin, of course, on the Persian woman wearin): like translucent (the chador is a full-length dress, not a veil or head covering, by the way) and in a material which may accentuate the female form rather than disguise it.
For those who are interested I have a published, "peer-reviewed" research paper on the chador which includes a full bibliography of my source materials as well as the methodology I used to produce my conclusions.
