Anti Daily Mail Bias...
I've noticed just recently that when you google a news story the DM version won't show up in the search results.
They have a policy of downgrading what they describe as 'fake' news sites and promoting mainstream 'real' news sites.
I neither like nor dislike the DM but it can't be described as a 'fake news' site, can it?

Hmm that is odd. Looking at some of the background chat it does look as if they’ve fallen foul of a clampdown on “girly images” more than anything else. That rinngs a bell having often followed up an AOG link and been invited to rate the latest bikinis etc :-) The Daily Mail May be irritating not it’s hardly a purveyor of “fake news” exactly. And the...

>> So all platforms are supposed to list the exact same search results in the exact same order. This order being some objective measure of the most frequently viewed. Is that what you're saying?
> Yes. Don't bother posting examples of where that didn't happen. That's the point of this post.
OK. All I'll say is that we disagree strongly about what a search engine should be, and my opinion of what it should be is closer to what search engines actually are.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, ellipsis. Even wrong ones.
I'm no expert on t'Internet but i know when something fishy is going on.
Two leading lefties went to the trouble of googling news stories, obviously with the intent of proving me a liar, but, and fair play to them, came back and expressed surprise at what was happening.
The DM version of events has always been at or near the top of search results for news stories. Now it ain't.

Nothing lasts forever, past results are no guarantee of future results, etc etc.
Or simply a minor blip, either on the part of Google, or even on the part of the DM, either of whom may have messed up.
Just because the DM has dropped off page 1, is not proof of "bias". Even a list of the most frequently viewed links would be biased towards whatever made them the most frequently viewed links. That could be financial influence, for example.

not necessarily a manual action, looks like an algorithm update did the trick, but nobody knows why, even Google

That is pretty paranoid. My aim was not to prove you a liar, it was to verify the allegation, and it did.
Both the Daily Mail and Google are aware of the anomaly, and are working to resolve it. Both agree that it is a technical problem rather than deliberate censorship. Thanks to jno for the informative link to the SEO site.

Same thing. ;-)
I've no doubt Google will get together with the DM and restore them to their former prominence.
The DM have a large legal department, power and reach.
Unlike the smaller players they've silenced.
Everyone, left or right, should be concerned that a handful of Silicon Valley billionaires are deciding which news and views we have access to.
