A couple of years ago. Very annoying. It's strange but I can make out if something is savoury or sweet. Also I can smell a couple of things up close like coffee for instance. I sometimes get the waft of perfume when someone passes me. Doctor says it will come back but I have my doubts. Anyone else have this problem ?
Loss of smell(anosmia) is difficult to treat depending upon the cause.
following a head injury, the chances of recovery of your sense of smell is minimal to nil, however if this is just an inflammation of the nerve of smell, then there is a chance of recovery....small, but there is a chance and you seem to have a residual function .
No guarantees, but ask you Dr if he would consider a steroid nasal sparay to be used daily for at least one month.
yeah this is standard medical practice
wait and see
sorry about this - tony av has good advice - its a disability so work your way around it. I was ready for deafness ( runs in the fambly) but found sight problems much more difficult to cope with ( still havent ) because it prevent me from lip reading
^^^.PP...nothing new about that, considering the article is nearly 20 years old and even before that, it was suggested that certain types of anosmia might respond to steroids.
I lost my sense of taste and smell about 20 years ago.
I think it was after a dentist appointment so whether a nerve was severed I don't know,
First time I realised I was at daughters, she had a new puppy who cxxxxed all over the floor. Everyone was complaining about the smell, I couldn't smell anything at all. Then I realised I had no sense of taste too.
Had hospital appointments for it but no use.
I can distinguish spicy, salty, sweet as a basis but what the food is have no idea. It's sad as I am areal foodie.
My Aunt has this condition. There was no obvious sign of it happening. Just one day she noticed that it was gone. Now it is a struggle for her to eat as everything does not entice her to eat it.
Of course each Xmas it just becomes a mad game of trying to find weird things she might smell, but so far nothing.
Doctors told her the same thing...it is bizarre and horrid for her at the same time.
I got Becanaise spray that the doctor recommended. I've started on it twice a day. There is another one that the doctor prescribes. I will see if this one does any good first.
