Mattress Advice Please
12 Answers
Can anyone give me tips for buying a mattress, please.
4 years ago I purchased a new mattress that was supposed to be the bees knees and guaranteed for 10 years.
It was an interior sprung mattress with a memory foam topper.
It is truly the most uncomfortable mattress I ever slept on. One of the spring sides has broken now so I am convinced I am going to fall off the side.
Its also sooo heavy both Mr C and myself can barely shift it.Because it has a memory topper its not possible to turn it over.
The time has come.....it has to go......but what do we replace it with.
What do you look for when buying a mattress please.

I hope you're sending it back under the guarantee.
As for what to look for, heaven knows. Different people like different mattresses, and given that we spend years on each one, we don't get much chance to find out what the alternatives might be like (and double the problem if the mattress is shared).
Some do give you a free trial period

And you can get separate memory foam toppers, if that helps.

You ask what ABers' choices are.
Mine and my wife's is along the lines of gingejbee's, we hate springs and memory foam. We have beds in three different places and the mattresses, all 2x2m in size, are all the same, the oldest being approaching 15 years old and is utterly unchanged and likely to last another 50 years anyway. The material is often called Frostex, although that is probably just the best known manufacturer of this type of foam. One of our beds' mattress is slightly firmer than the other but we sleep just as well on it as on the rest. In the beginning I was looking for something firm to go on our totally flat beds (it is established that flat beds are the best way to avoid/combat back troubles - the main reason for avoiding springs which ultimately result in sagging, and bouncy, beds). After choosing I was filled with fear - too firm, I was convinced. To test whether pressure points would be felt I lay down on it, intending to be there a while. I woke up some 15 minutes later - a pass ! The mattresses are a mere 4cm thick and each cost us somewhere around £100. Our younger son was brought up on one of the same type which he takes with him as he moves from country to country and describes sleeping on anything else as torture.
Just one preference example.

I bought a Tempur mattress about 12 odd years ago and have no reason to replace it yet. (If it's good enough for astronauts it may be good enough for me.)
Go try a few mattresses and see what suits you.
Meanwhile claim on the warranty. They may even send you a new one and remove the need to buy another.

I contacted the maker King Koil by email.
This is their reply.
Dear Mrs....., sorry To hear of the issue with your mattress, you must firstly report the issue to the Store where purchased, we are strictly trade only and the original bed was ordered through .... therefore they must send a service request from on your behalf to our Customer Service Office from there we can have the mattress looked at and take what action is necessary. I would advise however that there is no 10 Year guarantee with the mattress there is a 2 year guarantee and an 8 year warranty which effectively means there is a charge to replace a mattress that is beyond 2 years old and that charge is calculated on a sliding scale for example as your mattress providing proof of purchase is 4.5 years old its in its 5th year of use therefore there would be a 50% charge to replace it.
So there we have it. No joy from the maker..we will purchase a new one very soon. Where and what sort remains in the lap of the gods.
Thanks for the replies.
