how to explain a long break on my cv

my question is... how do i explain a break of 12 years on my cv, i dont mind people knowing i was a stay at home mum but thats not quite how i want to put it.. any ideas ?

It's nothing to be ashamed of.
Just list it as "Career break for raising children".

Personally, I can't see a problem - you raised a family and took time out to do it. As said, nothing to be ashamed of at all.

when i had professional help writing my cv they advised me to list it as if it were a paid job including skills acquired such as money management, menu preparation, cookery skills etc

It depends on where you plan to apply but listing your job experience in a 'Functional' format would be one way of minimizing the gap...
