I'm expecting to have my rear molar removed within the next 2 weeks. Is it possible to have a false tooth fitted?

You could. It's called a 'bridge', but it can't be fitted under the NHS until 6 months after the extraction.

bednobs: I don't have a good relationship with my dentist.
Ward~Minter: Not bothered about others seeing - it was the mastication that concerns me, thanks for the contribution.
Heathfield: the tooth in question is the rearmost end tooth; is it possible to fit a bridge to this?
