Those in an Aldi may be surprised to know the current speed limit is 70mph, even though you act as if it's already 80.

Did someone not tell them one can get to higher speeds without needing to go electric ? I know because nearly everyone zooms past me when I go along at 70mph.

The reason apparently is because higher speeds = more pollution. For example you spend more money travelling at 70 than you do 60.

Implementing electric vehicles would eradicate that pollution so there is less against argument

But anti-polution arguments against faster vehicles is a new one on me.

Their rivals are a Lidl less. Good. Most are doing 80mph plus in the overtaking lane in any case. Speed is not the primary cause of accidents. It is god awful driving standards. :-(

Lots of traffic travel at 77 to 80 MPH in the belief your speedo might have a 10% error. Upping limit to 80 will see people travelling at 90 mph.

Long overdue - 70mph is an anachronism.

In the right conditions I regularly drive at 90mph on the motorway and on more than one occasion have gone past police cars. They tend to be pragmatic and see exceeding the ridiculously low limit in the right conditions not to be worthy of pulling people over.

Car are safer, more reliable, brakes are very efficient and our cars run on decent rubber than when the limit was set over 50 years ago. But, some will say, people are the same - but they're wrong. People adapt to their environment, and as the roads have become busier and quicker people have adapted.

Yes there are very poor drivers out there, but there will be whatever the limit.

A mantra of mine "only a fool breaks the 2 second rule" i.e. leave at least 2 seconds between you and the car in front of you.

Yes Tonyv I always leave a two second gap regardless of the speed, the faster the bigger the gap should be really.

It was something that was drilled into me during my driving lessons.

Everyone ignores the limit anyway unless cameras are about. As OG says, if you drive at 70mph, you are the slowest thing on the motorway except for speed restricted vehicles.

It will make no difference to the speed people drive at. It will just mean that fewer people get nicked for speeding.
