Perennial Problem Persists

Back in November 2017 I posted on the problem I was having updating my satnav via the Garmin Express download.

Now as you can tell it's not been so much of a problem that I've gone out and parted with actual money for a new one but on recently revisiting their site and forums there's been a lightbulb moment.

Instructions mention that the device battery must be fully charged for downloads to take place but no matter what I do the icon on the machine never shows green to indicate this is the case.
There is text saying that charging is complete but the icon suggests otherwise.

I thought to myself 'dying battery' so sourced a replacement, fitted it and it's exactly the same as the original, showing it's still charging after many hours connected to the mains.

Apart from a factory reset which will mean losing favourites and history does anyone have a thought on what's happening in my electric map and what to do about it?

I suspect that the only reason Garmin say the battery must be fully charged is that there may be a calamitous result if the battery goes flat during the update process, so I think the fact that your battery never thinks it's fully charged is a red herring. Is there no way you can attempt the upgrade with the satnav attached to its charger? If nothing else it would prove to you that lack of a fully-charged battery is not the problem.

I've tried that, bhg, taking it straight from the mains charger to the computer where it still gets a charge from the data cable but to no avail, the nav isn't detected no matter which of the USB slots I use.

Maybe it's time to bite the bullet and update your satnav, douglas. I had no joy updating an old TomTom a couple of years ago so I eventually replaced it. The current ones have much better chips in them, resulting in finding the satellites faster when you power them on, faster calculating routes and faster re-calculating your route if you go wrong. You can also get them with free lifetime map upgrades and live traffic information. With my TomTom I can also sit at my computer, set a route and then send it to the satnav; next time I get in the car the satnav tells me it has received a new route. All these facilities are free to use once you've bought the option; it's cheaper in the long run than buying upgrades when you think you need them.
