Anyone watch the first instalment of Giri/Haji last night on BBC2? Just watched another 2 episodes on Iplayer and am quite enjoying it's twists and turns.

Yes, and enjoyed it....will watch it each week when broadcast and not on i-player. (I suspect many on here weren't interested or gave up when they saw much of it was sub-titled!).
And then....there's another two episodes of Spiral tonight..

Personally, I much prefer subtitles....so, I'm glad there was no dubbing.

I very much dislike dubbing - I can't watch a film that's dubbed. Thank goodness we don't get much of it now.
Looking forward to Kiri/Hah I later on.

Thank gawd it's not dubbed. Nothing worse, imho, and it always looks awkward. Much prefer subtitles. Besides, there's not a great deal of it subtitled - mainly when 2 Japanese are speaking to each other without the presence of a westerner.

Just watched it tonight. I wasn’t sure to start with but really enjoyed it after a slow start. Not sure if I understood the animated sequence - is the brother dead?

Dubbing is fine, allows you to watch the film. Subtitles are like trying to watch while distracted by reading the book.

hellywelly; no, the brother isn't dead. I think the animated sequence was used just to tell that particular part of the story.
As regards my earlier comment re sub-titles; Episode 4 tells the back story of how Yuto (Kenzo's brother) came to be a Yakuza member. Therefore the episode is subtitled for quite some time.
OG; I was put right off dubbing in films and such when i watched the series of Bruce Lee films, back in the 70s. The character would talk for quite a few seconds but, thanks to the 'dubber', all that came out of his/her mouth was "Okay." :-((
