Can somebody tell me if it is etiquette to invite the Vicar & his wife to the Wedding reception after the marriage service or is it just a matter of choice ?

I would agree with crete, any church wedding I have been to, the minister has been at the reception afterwards and has said grace before the meal.
But as far as I have noticed, they never stay long.
I would say it would only be polite to invite them, they might not come, but the offer would be nice.

I went to 4 weddings last year, 3 catholic and one CofE. None of them had the vicar/priest there, nor were they invited. Not saying that is right, just that it is an out of date etiquette if you don't personally know them as a friend.
Anyone who is present at the reception can say grace. In fact it is more often the matre d' or the MC. My aunt did mine and she is a nun.
