Hob

Last night when my wife tried to ignite the gas hob it tripped the electric.
When I turned it back on, the oven wouldn't work.
Any ideas please?

P.S. the socket on the cooker switch still works.

Blown fuse in cooker plug?

Something tripped the electric, has to be the cooker. Need to get the maintenance folk in if you can't spot a blown fuse or other issue. Might has even blown the wiring inside, or the heater element.

It could be a problem with the piezo ignition system - the bit that generates a spark for ignition. On our Cannon cooker you have to push a button to ignite the hob but the oven is automatic; when you turn it on it automatically generates a spark until the gas lights. I guess that if the gas doesn't light within a short time the gas to the oven is automatically turned off. If your ignition system has failed, which could be the reason for the electricity tripping out, the oven won't work.
You could always try lighting the oven with a flame as an emergency measure; it may or may not work.

Thanks. The oven wasn't turned on when the fuse tripped. The oven is hard wired. I'm not sure about the hob. I'm going to have to investigate.

You said the electricity tripped when she tried to light one of the hobs, I'm guessing that was because the ignition system has developed a fault. The oven shares the same ignition system so won't light because it's faulty. The fact that the oven wasn't on when the fuse tripped is irrelevant.

Problem solved!
The hob had its own plug but it was behind a cabinet! The house is only 15 years old. Imagine putting it there with no access! It needed a new fuse.
