Do you wear a hat? Do you think men should remove theirs when addressing a woman?

I love wearing hats. I wouldnt care if a man didnt remove his hat when addressing me. Although I cant remember the last time I saw a man in a hat (rather than a cap). Apart from an old friend of mine. Used to dine with him regularly and he was SUCH a gentleman. He'd be 95 now and he could make you feel so special. He would lift his hat, walk on the outside of you, rise if I left the table or rejoined it etc. It felt like I was in some old black and white movie.

I was just going to post the "you can leave your hat on" clip from the Full Monty. But I think it might have got removed. Still I had a very pleasant few minutes ;)

Douglas; //Americans eh? Giving the world lessons in manners. :-)//

Generally speaking, I find Americans much more polite & courteous than the Brits.
I don't wear hats - don't like messing my hair
up ! I wouldn't mind if a man didn't 'doff his cap' at me, but would be utterly charmed if one did. Good, old fashioned manners. I remember my lovely Dad wearing a hat back in the day, it suited him ..
Very rarely. It wouldn't worry me whether a man took his off or not- but those wearing "proper hats" and not caps etc, often seem to- which is lovely :-)
No hat, K, but if I had one I would probably do it.
Meaningless, but still a nice gesture, and god knows, we could use a few more of them today.

Off at a tangent....
What gets me is those who don't take off their 'shades when talking to you.
I want to rip the damn things off and see the eyes. Otherwise, I've no idea what they're up to ;o)
I am trying to get out the habit of wearing a hat these days but as the weather gets colder and my hairline shorter I do sometimes wear a hat ( Not Baseball)
If wearing a cap and I have occasion to speak to a lady whilst wearing it I will doff it most definitely. That was the way I was brought up. If I failed to doff my school cap when he stopped to speak to a lady I was quickly reminded of my manners by a swift cuff around the ear. I rarely forgot.
'he' being my father
I spend a lot of time with older people, and the men always do. I honestly can't see it as objectionable in any way. I think it is a lovely thing to do.

retro; When you say "doff" do you mean touching the brim, lifting it slightly, or removing it?
I'm pleased none of the women on here have said it was patronising.
I think you must always remove a hat (men) when entering someone's home but some areas are ambiguous, like this morning I called in at my dentist's to make an appointment, didn't remove my hat in the corridor, but did so at the counter before talking to the lady-receptionist.

There seems to be less & less men wearing hats nowadays anyway.
There is a TV Scottish reporter, I think on Sky News, who has a rosy & round shaven head & he gives reports even when it's snowing without one, whether that says something about modern man or the Scots I don't know.

Look at an old outdoor photograph & you won't see any man without a hat or cap.

Khandro, what action would you have taken if you were wearing a beanie?

Would you have...

Taken it off instantly
Taken it off when at reception as you did
Taken it off hen you became too warm after being indoors with a beanie on? (meaning that if it was cold, you may not have took it off at all)
Not taken it off?
I don't wear hats, I am not bothered if a man takes his hat off or not.

When I was growing up men always seem to raise their hat to my mother.
I wouldn’t expect a man to remove his hat when talking to me, because most of the hat wearers I know wear beanies or baseball caps.

I’m with The Builder on sunglasses. I always take mine off when talking to people, unless the sun is actually shining right in my eyes.
My grandfather wore a cap for work ( he worked outside ) and a bowler for every funeral he attended, except the last one.

When I was a school kid I doffed my cap by lifting it off my head a couple of inches. Now days,if I wear a hat/cap I just touch the brim between thumb and forefinger when speaking to a Lady. I always remove my hat and bow my head when a funeral passes by.
Again that was training. Police Officers in uniform were instructed to salute the deceased.
I don't expect men to take their hats off to wonen and I am very much of the older generation. However, I expect men to take their hats off indoors when visiting or eating in restaurants etc. That would include baseball caps, beanies, etc. Come to think of it expect women to do the same. Pet hate of mine! This excludes people having chemotherapy.
Personally, I hate wearing hats even when the temperature falls!
