Prior to this, mediaeval alchemists (wizard-scientists) had made discoveries, especially in chemistry, but in the 17th Century scholars started to look at science without the occult or supernatural. Important names include Newton, who explained the law of gravity, and Boyle, father of modern chemistry. In the 18th century, much work was done on the separation of gases, and Galvani made frogs' legs move with electricity. More work was done on electricity in the 19th Century, e.g. Volta, inventor of the battery, and Faraday, inventor of the dynamo and the elctric motor. Also in the 19th Century came Darwin's theory of evolution and much discovery of dinosaur and other fossils.
