Frozen Clothes Breaking - Is It A Myth?

I have heard many times about clothes that have frozen on the washing line snapping, usually jeans and shirts.
I don't believe it. I think the ice would break but not the clothing. Does anyone know for sure?

'Pulley' hanging from ceiling is a CREEL where I come from, ie Yorkshire.

Mine never broke, and I took many, many frozen items off the clothes line years ago. Everything goes in the tumble dryer now.

I've just Googled and come up with Pulley Maid (which is what we used to call ours, back in the day) and Lazy Betty.

There is enough damp in this olde house without a pulley. A hammock could be good ;)

Thanks, Ken - I guess it has many regional names. I think modern ceilings are too low to use them. Can't say I miss having wet washing dripping down my neck while I'm eating my cornflakes :D

I go to quite a few people with a "pulley" as we call them here...
I have never known of clothes breaking when frozen. I'm sure the ice does, but it is hard to imagine actual clothes would.

When I bought mine (about 10 years ago) it was called a Kitchen Maid.

BTW - I didn't know the term "Sheila Maid" when we had one. We always called it the rack.

We hung our rack over the bath and had the horse in front of the fire. No wonder our house had mould :(
