I can't understand why he can't be named, it seems very strange to me though
at least he has been caught and will be sentenced February next year.

her parents must be devastated, you let your daughter go and this happens. I know it could happen any where but she was so young. I hope that he gets life.
From the article:
Why can we not name the killer?
In New Zealand's court system, the accused and victims can ask to have their name suppressed, which means it becomes illegal to publish it in newspapers, online or anywhere else.

The purpose is to protect people not yet proven guilty - but also to have a fairer trial by ensuring the jury is not prejudiced by media coverage.

Images can also be withheld. When the main suspect in the Christchurch mosque attacks, Brenton Tarrant, appeared in court, the judge ordered the media to blur pictures of his face
So sounds fair enough.

Presumably it is lifted once sentence is passed?
Perhaps this case will make other young girls think twice before going back to a stranger's flat. Before anyone says anything I do not think she deserved to be murdered. Now he has been found guilty I expect him to be named.
I agree with Boto.
To add to the horrendous ordeal her family have had to face (and will probably do so for the rest of their lives), they’ve had to listen to “evidence” about their daughter participating in rough sex.

so undoubtedly once he is sentenced we will know his name, not that it matters i guess unless he is well known. I find this case as disturbing as Jodie Chesney
another young girl seemingly in the wrong place at the wrong time..
Not necessarily, Emmie...
//Justice Simon Moore ordered that the suppression order which prevents naming the defendant would remain in place indefinitely until lifted by the court//

I don't know why, though.

extraordinary if true. Why should the bstard get anonymity, the poor girl has had all her details splashed over the courts, doesn't seem right at all.
No, it doesn't...
I too, agree with boto at 8.25. These brutes can turn on the charm and most young girls are far too trusting.
I don't. I don't think the behaviour of "young girls" is the problem we need to be addressing.
He can be named, and was in yesterday's Times, complete with details about him and a photo.

i hope he does indeed get life without parole.
Unless I am mistaken he was named in 2018.
His lawyers asked for his name not to be revealed but it clearly said in The Independent that he was a 26 years old and gave his name.
Folk should respect the New Zealand Court Order and not name or give links to sites naming the murderer.
sorry scorpiojo^^^^ Didn't read the link. Confirms what I have just written .thanks
Question Author
not in any papers i read, or the BBC news. Now we know, let's hope he gets what is coming to him for subjecting her to a sustained assault and murder.
According to jo's link, he might be named at his sentencing in February, but it's only in NZ where the papers are banned from using info about him.
