I currently have a 22 megathingy (sorry, don't know the proper word) broadband speed, and found out yesterday that when I move house soon, my speed will be between 1 and 3.
I currently have BT TV, but won't be able to use that. Not a problem because I have now ordered Sky, but I was wondering, does that mean my streaming days are over?

I have about 4 mbps (talktalk says average should be 11 !). I can just about stream movies if nothing else is running.
When we only had 1.5 youtube vids were pointless unless you let them buffer all the way through and restarted, it was OK for normal browsing but our Smart TV couldn't download anything so that will be a feature of Sky you will find hard to take advantage of. Are you sure that's the fastest you can get where you're going? Ours improved massively (to 38) when we paid for fibre-optic.
I have 11.66 with Virgin

Yes, I’m sure. BT, Plusnet and Sky have said that’s the max. It’s the old copper stuff, not fibre, apparently.

I’ve had slow at a previous address, and when I got fibre there, it was a huge difference, but I don’t know what speed I was on then so can’t compare. If it’s the same as the slow speed there, it’ll be usable for regular internet stuff.
I rarely download and never upload, so it was just the occasional Netflix or Youtube I was bothered about, but if I can’t do it then I’ll just have to get used to it. The price you pay for wanting to live in the middle of nowhere, I suppose.

I believe you need cable for Virgin, dannyk. That’ll never happen out in the sticks.
Check if you have been quoted normal broadband instead of fibre.
bigbad, sorry, didn't know you were in the sticks.

Tuvok, there is no fibre in the area.
Why, thank you Adfa!
Will you have a half decent mobile signal
Question Author
I do have a mobile, Adfa, but have no interest in it, and just need it for the occasional text or an emergency. A typical conversation with my children is “Mum, I sent you a text days ago” “Oh, did you, my phone is probably still in my handbag from when I last went out."
I’m with BT, and have never got a signal when I’ve been to the house, although all other networks seem to have 1 or 2 signal bars.
BT informed me yesterday that I can still use it for facebook/facetime and other similar things, but not my cup of tea.
Sky however, have said theirs will work fine, so I ordered a sim card when I ordered my TV package. Card arrived today, but haven’t tried it yet.
After five years of being promised high speed broadband and then being told we are not going to be included in the next roll out (so that’s at least another five years) I slung out the land line got myself one of these
https://consumer.huawei.com/uk/smart-home/b310/
Signed up to a sim only deal with Three at £20 per month with half price for the first six months that gives you unlimited data unlimited minutes unlimited texts
http://www.three.co.uk/Store/SIM/Plans_for_phones
Others are available
I had about 1 bar on my mobile but borrowed one of the routers and sim card to test it out, the router is better at picking up the signal and produces 4 to 5 bars
It’s not always perfect as speed ranges between 8 and 20Mbps but it’s a whole lot better than 2 and a lot cheaper than the land line I also managed to get £70 cashback

Thanks Adfa.
I’ll see how the broadband is when I move in, and if I’m banging my head against a brick wall, will look further into your link.
My sim only deal with Sky seems quite good. Unlimited calls and texts and a small amount of data usage at £4 a month. I was paying £5 a month for a lot less with BT. Maybe it’s time I tried to embrace my mobile. No chance of me using the internet on it though, phones are way too small for me to do that.
In fact, I’m feeling quite liberated having binned BT after always being with them. TV and mobile with Sky, internet and phone with Plusnet, all 4 added together will cost me £36 less a month than I was paying BT for the lot.
Plusnet is owned by BT.

I wasn’t aware of that Tuvok, but the package I chose is cheaper than BT’s equivalent.
