You only have to look at what happened when the News of the Screws published details of kiddy fiddlers to see what kind of debacle would ensue if the general public were given this responsibility.

Jean Charles de Menezes case was undeniably imcompetant, but I'd still rather have trained professionals doing the job than lynch mob justice.

I think you overestimate the intelligence of many of the general public, larkin. As Waldo has mentioned, when the despicable kiddy fiddlers were named and shamed by the News of the World, the lynch mob mentality led to the death of one innocent man, the wrecking of the homes of other innocents and a violent assault on a female paediatrician.
