Wouldn't it be better if, instead of all this secret intelligence surveillance, M15 and the police identified all suspects to the nation and we could all report the whereabouts of these people and their movements ?

You only have to look at what happened when the News of the Screws published details of kiddy fiddlers to see what kind of debacle would ensue if the general public were given this responsibility.

I think you overestimate the intelligence of many of the general public, larkin. As Waldo has mentioned, when the despicable kiddy fiddlers were named and shamed by the News of the World, the lynch mob mentality led to the death of one innocent man, the wrecking of the homes of other innocents and a violent assault on a female paediatrician.
