Cloning A Hard Drive To An Ssd

Have spent all day awaiting EraseUS ToDo to copy disk 0 to the larger SSD. Bit put out it was going to partition the SSD such that the new C: drive would be the same size as the existing, but figured that was part of the "clone" deal and I may be able to sort drive sizes for the whole thing later. One problem at a time.

Just checked, it's stopped at last, but not done the job. Claimed it failed to read the source ! Clearly it had no sensible fix other than to give up.

Somewhat annoyed.

Anyone got recommendations as to a decent copy drive software ? Obviously preferably free. But if it had a good rep I might be persuaded to pay. If it allowed one to say what to do with the extra disk space first, that'd be a bonus. I don't need more partitions, I'd prefer and enlarged system drive.

Clonezilla has been around since when Fred Flintstone was using pedal power for his computer but it still gets excellent reviews:

That 2nd one seems to want to clone a partition rather than a disk. Hope it doesn't have issues when the original is removed then.

Also, the destination disk now shows something which I would have assumed would be overwritten during any cloning, but now will just stick there.

Ah. Went back. probably used the wrong option. Seems to be trying a disk to disk clone now.

Had to leave it running back home. Just accessed it over the Internet. Looked weird at first, but looking at drives via drive management clarified things. Seems to have worked. Next time must turn off, remove original disk, connect clone in it's place, and see if all boots ok.

A small question, clearly the PC was operating during the copy, how does copy software cope with small changes at the source ? Can things get lost ?

I've used Macrium Reflect free for years and it's worked great. Did you need your programs which were installed on source drive? Maybe a fresh copy of windows on the ssd might have been better if not. Windows 10 can be legally downloaded free from Microsoft and a legitimate licence key bought from ebay. Again I've done this many times without problems.

Thanks. But wanted as little disruption as possible. So, yes, everything presently there, to stay.

Way things have gone I'll be retrying in the New Year since I didn't get around to it this past week. I'll keep Macrium Reflect in mind though, in case I've further issues.
