Just watching one of the news channels, "Father" Xmas seen as sexist, and gender neutral, "Santa" is the preferred term for the PC brigade.

Should we embrace tradition or change things?

I'm not really bothered about whether we cal the present-bringer 'Father Christmas' or 'Santa' (as long as he doesn't forget me!).

However I suspect that if you did your very best to ensure that your children only ever heard the term 'Santa', when you asked them what they thought Santa looked like, they'd say "Well, he's an old man with a white beard . . .". There's not much point in changing the name unless you change all the pictures of him/her/it too!

Chico - Quite right. Today's image of Santa is originally an invention of Coca Cola, I think, and definitely not female.
