Theland, that thing with the double S, the first one written as an F, involved quite complicated rules. The fs rarely appears after 1800, and was dropped from typesetting/printing around the same time.
Actually it has nothing to do with double ss. The rule was that the letter was written as an elongated f but as the last letter was written as s.
Jackdaw, the stuff I read - about the double S - was quite interesting, briefly.
Yes any word ending in ss would be written as fs. if ss came in the middle of a word it would be written ff. S was reserved for the final letter, a relic from Greek which had two forms of the letter sigma.
Thanks, Jackdaw... and I've realised we're a long way from the OP. Sorry, Naomi. I was happy with Santa's many - and generous - gifts.
We had a wonderful day. We don't do presents though. (Well my nanna does but she feels entitled to ignore such instruction at 93). Oh and my mum who bought our cats presents!!

I'm meant to be prepping for tomorrow but I appear to have mislaid my motivation. Which is unfortunate as I have 10 for lunch.
I bought ready made pigs in blankets this year for the first time and they were horrible, Tesco finest too- horrible because they used chorizo in the sausage, gross.
Bought my PIB from a town centre butcher. Don't usually do them but son did when he catered last year. Almost forgot about them being in fridge but, with just a few minutes to go until the roasties - and therefore the entire meal - were ready. So I popped them in the roasting dish with the spuds. Very, very tasty. Well, no-one left any for the dog :-)
Merry Christmas to you all from a driech and dismal Budapest,
I asked my wife 3 weeks ago,
What can I get you for your Christmas,
She replied I have you that’s all I need.
Jordyboy - you are a rich man.
Yes Thelland,I know I am ,a very merry Christmas to you and yours, and many of them.

Thank you for the good wishes - I hope everyone had a lovely day. And builder, you got it. Very good. :o)

Anneasquith, //The gifts of love and respect are priceless. Xmas sadly has become all about money .//

It doesn’t follow that that giving gifts of monetary value precludes love and respect. Still, I’ll put a hair shirt on my wish list next year - just in case. ;o)
he bought me Champagne, Belgian Chocs, flowers
a book, after eight mints in a beautiful tin and a happy birthday balloon.
I got an Alexa from DIL. That will keep me busy all day setting up . Although Son is coming after work to help. I have wanted one since a long time. So happy I am.
