It really brought home the horrors of war in all its aspects, whether dying, receiving 'the' telegram, suffering from personality changes etc. I wish they'd put it on again.
I remember the blonde girl , one of the sons' girlfriends, she left acting to set up a children's charity and had an unusual name beginning with C I think. The eldest son John who came home after being a prisoner I have seen in quite alot of things in recent years. But the mother was amazing, jean I think her name was, and Colin Douglas had been in comedy before this as I recall and played someone's straight man , with broard west country accent, or am I totaly imagining that?
Dot, her name was Coral Atkins; it was the first time I saw domestic violence portrayed on TV and thought she was brilliant, constantly shaking and walking on eggshells in case David hit her. I've seen all three brothers (John, Philip, David and Robert - oh, that's four!) in various things on TV. I used to like the dad, and the bloke who played Uncle Sefton. The dad has been in other things too.
