how do I get my clever budgie back in his cage?

like him to have lots of freedom but wont go out with him free, but he takes half hour to get in his cage, any suggestions?

Maybe some thin fishing line tied round his leg, thats what my nan does.

You need to encourage him to step up onto your finger by tempting him with some millet or something yummy that he really likes and when you put him back in his cage give him another bit. Also don't shut him in every time you replace him in the cage, so just practise doing it when you don't need to put him away, this way he'll learn that he isn't necessarily not going to be allowed back out again, which will make him happier about going back in his cage.
