Could this decision pave the way for ethical veganism to become a protected characteristic under the Equality Act?

If this comes to pass, am I the only one to think it is nuts?

Surely it is a false equivalency to suggest a belief, which is arrived at personally, should have the same protection under the Act as race or sexuality or disability which nobody has a choice over.

Vegan sacked by the League Against Cruel Sports and promptly accuses them of violating his quasi religious beliefs. Haha I approve 100% when the luvvies eat each other, but do wish that they would leave the rest out of their car crash animal, vegetable, miserable lives.
The whole contrived clown circus of manoeuvres has become a series of jokes that write themselves. Pass the sick bag vicar.
//No, just in dumpsters.//

?????? Dumpsters isn't that the septic term for a skip? Do we in fact have an interloper pretending to be British?
Togo --- "?????? Dumpsters isn't that the septic term for a skip? "

No, that is the skeptic word, especially for xenophobes.
So man on the news just said it could lead to people refusing to put meat thru a checkout.

Really, I bet they dont.

"No conflict of interest there then; get the non-disclosure agreements ready."

You're seeing a conflict where there isn't one.

It's the League Against Cruel Sports, not the 'League Against Pension Money Being Invested In Companies That May Test Products On Animals That May Ultimately Lead To The Improvement Of Our Lives.'
Ah, I see Deskdiary, it is a right to know thing ( with workers pension money ??) but only your masters have a right to know.

Cruelty in sports and cruelty to animals have zero connections.
Got it!
???

Alas it is clearly you that doesn't 'get it'.

There is a yawning chasm of a difference between cruel sports involving animals that may be undertaken to sate those watching, to animal testing that is undertaken ultimately to improve our lives.

You also don't know how pensions work - I know exactly where my pension money is invested, it is freely available information.
Deskdiary, you don't know who those companies being invested in are nor what form of testing they are doing'
You know exactly where your pension money is invested, and that information is freely available to you, well good, that is how it should be but that is not the case here or Mr Casamitjana is unlikely to need to inform his colleagues about their pension details.
Whether he wins his tribunal or not, and we probably dont have enough information to pass judgement on that, he has indeed paved the way for ethical veganism to be a protected characteristic. Hoorah! Whats the harm in it? One less section of society to be bullied at work for having made an ethical choice about something.
Why do any of these characteristics need special protection anyway ?

Maydup - you haven't considered the possible consequences if ethical veganism is made a protected characteristic.

Christmas party banned because people are served Turkey in the presence of an ethical vegan who objects and therefore finds it passive discrimination.

Spurious allegations of a failure to promote or interview because of perceived discrimination by an ethical vegan.

Claims against restaurants for discrimination for failing to provide a vegan option.

If I could be bothered I could easily provide other examples.
Tourists are often derided for going to far-flung places and not giving the local cuisine a good go.

This lot travel all the way across the universe from Vega and won't eat a pasty or a sausage.
Maybe those from Vega don't do carnism douglas9401 ?
LOL - Maydup - you haven't considered the possible consequences if ethical veganism is made a protected characteristic. Etc

Of course I have!

Protected characteristics are relevent to employment law, not everyday life. A restaurant wont be legally obliged to offer a vegan option tomorrow any more than it did yesterday, but it will be considered good practise for a works canteen to.

Indeed employees will be protected against failure to promote because they repeatedly upset the apple cart by not eating the turkey dinner at Christmas party!
A spokesman for McCain said 'This is the thin end of the wedge'.
Maybe that's the wedge that jamming up all the honest answers douglas9401 ???
