Can anyone give me advice on how to go about getting a divorce please?
My mum as been separated from my step dad for 19 months and now wants to officially divorce.
My mums 69 and as been married for nearly 40 years.
She's asked for my help and when ive looked into it, it seems really expensive and she doesn't have a lot of money.
Any advice would be grateful.

If your mother will be applying for divorce on the grounds of 'separation', she'll need to wait until she's been apart from her husband for two years (if he's happy to agree to the divorce) or for five years (if he won't consent to divorce).
The fee for applying for a divorce is £550 but there's help available for certain people on benefits or with a low income:

If they've lived apart for 2 years (and she's not far off it) it can be very simple and therefore cheap. Otherwise - well I've had to chip in a couple of thousand of my savings to get daughter out of a horrible marriage. Best advice is to hang on for the 24 months and go for mutual consent, if he will.
I echo 237SJ. There are always solicitors who will give an initial, free consultation. Find one, and make sure that when you go you have a concise list of questions and facts. Good luck.
If he's going to be difficult then your mum is looking at waiting for 5 years - unless she can prove assault or something like that. If that is the case then things are a little different, but she needs police statements.
