Why would it "bear a resemblance" to the book? It's not a television version of the book - it's a newly-written drama based on the book.
All the major TV critics loved it too.

I watched the first episode and found it entertaining. I don't think it's meant to be taken too seriously. I liked the jokes.

I liked the jokes too. Especially the Nun, Van Hellsing (nice twist) who’s condescension is a lovely counterpoint to the horror aspect.
