replacing brick in cavity wall

A small bird fell into my cavity wall. I have taken out an outside brick to release it.
Now I have a hole in the wall. What is the best method to replace the brick.

You just insert a new brick, with mortar.

While catso's advice is generally sound, you may find it difficult to insert a single brick with sufficient mortar to hold is securely and finish or "point" the mortar properly. I'd say obtain a tube of mortar repair from your DIY with a good caulking gun. Once the brick is inserted, use the caulking gun and mortar repair (which is usually acrylic) to fill voids and smooth with a wetted forefinger...

I have the brick and know I have to put it back with mortar Catso,but do you put mortar on top of the existing bricks in the wall then replace the brick leave mortar to harden then put more mortar round the gaps at sides and top ,
Perhaps i should put mortar all round the hole top,bottom sides and push the brick back in hole .
I thought the brick would squeeze the mortar out of the hole using the second method.
Can anyone else advise.

Easiest way is to wedge the brick in place with small wooden plugs, one on top, bottom and either end, then fill with mortar

The last brick (which, unfortunately, is also your first) is always the trickiest. The usual way is to place mortar on the bottom of the hole, and on the ends of the brick, slide your brick in and then make good the missing mortar as best you can. The best implement is fingers (though wash them afterwards - H&S etc etc) or a small stick. You won't be able to replace the mortar as well as the original, just make sure there's as much as possible, and you get a fully weatherproof finish.

Don't get too concerned about the strength of the (re)finished wall, as one brick effectively 'missing' is neither here nor there.

BTW, you have removed all the old mortar, have you, off the wall and the brick? It's next to impossible to refit the brick if you haven't.
